Description of Service
Our department manages the placement, renewal, and claims processing of the university’s insurance policies, including general liability, property, worker’s compensation, third party users, and volunteer insurance as well as other specialty policies. We identify potential risks and serve as advisors to all departments. We manage the defensive driver’s course which is required for anyone driving a university vehicle and we oversee drone operations on campus.
The services of UNM’s Risk Services Department are designed to support the entire university community, including:
- Faculty and Staff: We serve as a resource for all faculty and staff. We assist with risk management related to teaching, research, and administrative duties and handle staff injuries / worker’s compensation claims. We partner with safety to ensure a safe work environment for staff and faculty.
- Students: We partner with Environmental Health and Safety to promote a safe environment conducive to learning and personal development for students. We provide guidance for events and handle volunteer and third-party insurance for activities on and off campus.
- Volunteers and Third-Party-Users: We provide necessary insurance coverage and risk assessments for non-employees involved in university activities or using university facilities.
- One University: We handle claims for damage to all university property and vehicles and serve as a liaison between UNM departments and the State of New Mexico. We work with the state and our brokers to protect the universities assets and interests.
